Hair transplants: costs, duration and side effects

You may only have just realised you’re facing the problem of hair loss, or you may have been struggling with it for years, but you’ve certainly considered a hair transplant as one of your treatment options. As soon as the idea of a hair transplant crosses your mind, a whole host of questions may spring to mind. First of all, what exactly is a hair transplant? How does the procedure work? How much does a hair transplant cost?

If you’re thinking about a hair transplant, it’s worth finding out more about the details of the treatment. In this article, you’ll learn what a hair transplant is, how much it costs, who it’s recommended for, and what alternative treatment methods are available that might even be more beneficial.

What is a hair transplant?

The hair transplant is a medical procedure in which hair follicles are surgically transplanted into areas affected by hair loss. It is a commonly used procedure for male-pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. During the procedure, the donor hair – that is, the hair follicles to be transplanted – is usually extracted from the back of the scalp and then ‘implanted’ into the balding areas, where it is placed in the appropriate layer of the skin.
The hair transplant requires a sufficient quantity of donor hair, the number of which is obviously limited; consequently, the procedure is most suitable for treating moderate hair loss. It is highly likely that lost hairs can be replaced in the hairline and crown areas.

Types of hair transplant procedures

There are two generally accepted approaches to hair transplant: FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation). Although both methods are used to restore hair loss, there are significant differences between the two procedures.
FUE is a more modern method, which minimises the risk of scarring and offers a higher hair follicle survival rate than the FUT method. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, so the choice of hair transplant method should always be tailored to individual needs.
It is important to note that, unlike traditional hair transplant methods, the Denza laser hair treatment, which utilises modern laser technology, does not result in scarring; it thickens the hair by stimulating the patient’s own hair follicles, so there is no need to transplant hair follicles.

The cost of a hair transplant: how much does a hair transplant cost?

Although there is no definitive answer to this question, one thing is certain: the procedure will cost more than your credit card’s daily limit. Of course, it depends largely on where the hair transplant is carried out; clinics abroad may charge as much as $15,000 for a hair transplant.
The situation is slightly better in Hungary, as you can find hair transplant procedures for as little as 600,000–700,000 HUF, although the procedure can cost as much as 1.5–2 million HUF. It is important to take both experience and qualifications into account when choosing a specialist to carry out the hair transplant. It is not worth skimping on a procedure like this. It is also important to note that every clinic charges different prices, and the final cost of a hair transplant is influenced by many factors.

Factors affecting the cost of a hair transplant:

  • The location of the hair transplant: in which country and in which city the procedure is carried out
  • The hair transplant method: whether the FUT or FUE procedure is right for you
  • How far you need to travel for the procedure
  • The condition of your hair and the number of hair follicles to be transplanted
  • The quality of the chosen clinic and the experience of the specialist performing the operation

Who is suitable for a hair transplant?

Although many people consider it, not many are suitable candidates for a hair transplant. Experts in hair transplants can determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure, but here is a little guidance on the subject.

You are likely to be a suitable candidate for a hair transplant if:

  • You are experiencing male-pattern hair loss that has not yet progressed to significant baldness
  • You have thinning or receding hair
  • You have lost some of your hair due to a burn, illness or accident

You are probably not a suitable candidate for a hair transplant if:

  • You have a completely bald scalp or there are no donor areas
  • You have scarring on your scalp or are experiencing hair loss associated with scarring
  • Your hair loss is a side effect of medication
  • You are suffering from telogen effluvium caused by illness or chronic stress (diffuse hair loss)

How long does a hair transplant take?

The operation itself takes several hours; a hair transplant may take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the extent of hair loss and the number of hair follicles that need to be transplanted. In some cases, a hair transplant is not a one-off procedure; several operations may be required to achieve the desired results.
You will then also need to be prepared for the challenges of the recovery process, as it takes around one year to make a full recovery. You can read more about the recovery process in this article.

The most common complications of hair transplants:

  • Pain, swelling and tenderness
  • Development of infection
  • Scarring
  • Cyst formation at the suture site
  • Bleeding
  • Anaesthesia-related complications
  • Development of heart problems during surgery
  • Patient dissatisfaction

The issue of satisfaction with hair transplants

A hair transplant can be a successful way of improving the condition of your hair, but it is important to have realistic expectations regarding the procedure and the condition of your hair following the operation. For many men, a hair transplant significantly improves the appearance of their hair, but there are a few factors you should bear in mind when making your decision.

Hair transplanted during the procedure:

  • May have a different texture to the original hair strands (this is a consequence of follicular damage occurring during the procedure)
  • May behave differently to the original hair when styled
  • May grow in a different pattern to before
  • In some cases, the transplanted hair follicles may not produce any hair

How can a hair transplant be avoided?

Whilst a hair transplant is one possible procedure for hair restoration, there are also less invasive and more affordable options which can not only replace lost hair but may even prevent the need for a hair transplant and halt further hair loss.
One such treatment is the Denza laser hair treatment, which is capable of restoring the condition of the hair even in cases of genetic or hormonal hair loss. By stimulating the cells in the scalp, even dormant hair follicles can start growing hair again, allowing you to restore the health of your hair without the need for painful surgical procedures. Unlike hair transplants, this treatment can also stop further hair loss, so you need not worry about your hair thinning again.
The treatment is quick, taking 30 minutes per session, and is almost entirely painless. What’s more, it can achieve amazing, visible results in just 10 sessions. The results look natural, as the texture or growth of the hair does not change; it simply becomes thicker and healthier as a result of the treatment.
