“I didn’t have any noticeable, severe hair loss, but the quality of my hair gradually deteriorated and my hair strands became increasingly weak. I also frequently experienced irritation caused by seborrhoeic dermatitis. First, with the help of a dermatologist, we restored the health of my scalp, followed by Denza laser treatments, which restored the strength of my hair.”
“I was experiencing severe hair loss on the top of my head and at my temples; my scalp was irritated, and on top of that, my hair was visibly falling out – I’d end up with loads of strands in my hands whenever I washed it. First, I went for a pre-hair transplant consultation; after that, I decided to give Denza laser hair treatment a go; and finally, I opted for this, which I haven’t regretted. It turned out that my scalp was severely inflamed, and the follicles were very clogged with built-up sebum. I hadn’t even realised before that this problem could be solved with a laser; clearing the scalp paves the way for hair growth. After the third treatment, the severe hair loss stopped, and by the fifth session, both my family and my hairdresser had noticed a positive change in my hair. I’m delighted that I’ve finally managed to solve my problem without surgery and that my scalp is at last healthy; the irritation and hair loss have stopped.”
A COVID-19 infection not only puts a strain on the body during the acute phase of the illness, but in many cases can also cause unpleasant symptoms even months later. One of the most common, yet lesser-known, after-effects of the disease is increased hair loss, which can affect more than 60% of those who have been infected with a COVID-19 infection, a condition that is worrying and emotionally distressing for many. The processes taking place in the body as a result of the infection, as well as the increased stress associated with the condition, can trigger severe hair loss, which may lead to significant hair loss in the long term. However, this process is usually reversible: with the right support, your hair can regain its healthy condition.

What is a COVID-19 infection?
Covid-19 is a viral disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The coronavirus primarily attacks the respiratory tract, but it affects the whole body. The course of the infection varies from person to person: for some, it presents as a mild form with flu-like symptoms, but it can also lead to a severe condition requiring hospital treatment. After recovery, many people experience lingering symptoms, which are collectively referred to as post-Covid symptoms.
What symptoms does Covid-related hair loss cause?
In post-COVID hair loss, the majority of hair follicles enter the resting phase prematurely and then fall out; this is why hair loss occurs 1–3 months after the COVID-19 infection. Post-Covid hair loss most commonly manifests as uniform hair loss affecting the entire scalp.
The first sign of post-Covid-19 hair loss is sudden, severe hair loss: increased hair loss when washing or combing the hair, a noticeable reduction in hair volume and a dramatic thinning of the hair.
How does Covid affect your hair?
A COVID-19 infection can cause hair loss in several ways:
Microcirculation is impaired, meaning that the hair follicles do not receive sufficient oxygen and nutrients.
Strain on the immune system: hair growth is a ‘luxury’ process for our bodies, as it is not essential, yet it is energy-intensive. Therefore, in the event of a viral infection, the body diverts energy away from less important processes, such as hair growth.
The stress and inflammation associated with the infection, as well as the tension, anxiety and sleep disturbances caused by the illness, lead to a disruption of the hair growth cycle.
A loss of appetite during and after the illness, as well as impaired nutrient absorption, can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies at the level of the hair follicles.
However, post-Covid-19 hair loss can be stopped before the illness leads to significant hair loss. A comprehensive treatment programme is crucial for restoring the health of the hair, and this can be provided by the personalised Denza More & Better Hair treatment.
Denza may offer an innovative and targeted solution to post-Covid hair loss: laser hair treatment may be able to support microcirculation, thereby stimulating the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles.
The treatments may also help to restore the hair growth cycle, potentially bringing hair strands back into the active growth phase and keeping them there. Furthermore, they may reduce any inflammation of the scalp.
During the assessment, we analyse more than 20 risk factors to determine what other causes of hair loss might exist alongside a previous COVID-19 infection. UsingAI-driven hair analysis, we obtain an accurate picture of the extent of post-Covid hair loss and the regenerative capacity of the hair follicles. Based on this assessment, we can also predict the rate at which your hair will respond to treatment.
During Denza laser hair treatment, we use a medical technology that goes beyond traditional solutions: HILT (High-Intensity Laser Therapy). This high-intensity laser targets the deeper layers of the scalp and helps protect your hair by activating processes at the cellular level.
What’s more, the multi-award-winning Denza More & Better Hair protocol takes a comprehensive approach: if you would like our specialist doctors to monitor your health, you can also benefit from laboratory tests and specialist consultations alongside your treatments.
What’s this?
HILT
High Intensity Laser Therapy
This high-intensity laser targets the deeper layers of the scalp and saves your hair by activating processes at the cellular level.
As well as laser treatments, the treatment package also includes at-home hair care products and specialised dietary supplements, which help to restore vitality to the hair follicles.
The comprehensive protocol is based on five key pillars, which are included in every treatment package
Denza Energy
Non-ablative laser hair stimulation treatments, which promote regeneration at a cellular level and increased blood circulation, as well as other energy-based stimulation treatments.
Denza Mechanotherapy
Highly effective treatments involving the administration of active ingredients and mechanical stimulation to improve microcirculation.
Denza Supplements
Vitamins and dietary supplements tailored to the stage of hair loss, designed to nourish the hair follicles from within.
Dr. Takács Dolores, Clinical Research Lead Dermatologist
“Following a COVID-19 infection, many patients experience significant hair loss due to the stress placed on the body, which, if left untreated, can even lead to extensive hair loss. Denza’s unique technology helps to restore microcirculation in the scalp and the hair growth cycle, allowing the hair to gradually regain its strength.”
Which Denza treatment package do our expert trichologists recommend for post-Covid hair loss?
In cases of post-Covid hair loss, we take several factors into account when selecting the appropriate treatment package. We determine the treatment package best suited to you based on the severity of the hair loss and the identified risk factors. If you had a COVID-19 infection some time ago and have been struggling with long-standing hair loss, we will recommend a more intensive treatment package to improve microcirculation.

Why does hair fall out after a coronavirus infection, and how long does the hair loss last?
Covid-related hair loss most commonly takes the form of a condition known as telogen effluvium. During post-illness hair loss, the stress placed on the body (fever, inflammation, infection, exhaustion) causes more hair follicles to enter the resting phase at the same time, and increased hair loss may be noticed 2–3 months after a COVID-19 infection. This can be alarming, but in most cases it is not permanent: the functioning of the hair follicles gradually returns to normal, and hair growth resumes within 3–6 months. If hair loss is severe, lasts for more than 6 months, is accompanied by patchy baldness or other symptoms (e.g. fatigue, suspected iron deficiency), it is advisable to seek a professional assessment, as it is possible that a COVID-19 infection has exacerbated an underlying condition.
What is the most effective treatment for post-Covid-19 hair loss, and when should you see a doctor?
In the case of Covid-related hair loss, the aim is to gently support the scalp and aid the regeneration of hair follicles: use a gentle, scalp-friendly shampoo, avoid excessive use of hair products that irritate the scalp, and focus instead on consistency (gentle washing, heat protection, loose hairstyles). Adequate nutrient intake is also important: a deficiency in protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D and B vitamins can impair hair growth, so it is worth supporting your body’s recovery after an illness. You should definitely consult Denza’s experts if your hair loss is very severe or long-term, or if you experience inflammation or persistent itching of the scalp, if your hair is thinning in patches, or if the symptoms do not improve even after an infection has cleared – in such cases, the condition can be effectively managed through targeted testing (e.g. iron stores, thyroid function, vitamin and mineral levels) and personalised treatment.
The expected result from the treatment varies from person to person and can be influenced by many factors – such as the patient’s health condition, hormonal disorders, vitamin, mineral or trace element deficiencies – so the result cannot be guaranteed.
