What are the symptoms of postnatal hair loss?

Hair loss is not usually common during pregnancy; rather, the process tends to begin approximately 2–4 months after childbirth.

A common symptom is finding a large number of hairs in your hand or on your comb when washing or combing your hair; in addition, there is a visible reduction in hair volume, particularly around the temples and the crown of the head, and the circumference of a ponytail decreases. The hair strands become thinner and weaker; in some cases, the hair loss may result in noticeable thinning or even bald patches. This is known as post-pregnancy telogen effluvium, which is increased hair loss resulting from a disruption to the hair’s natural life cycle.

How does pregnancy affect women’s hair?

During pregnancy, a woman’s hormonal balance changes radically. Thanks to increased oestrogen levels, many expectant mothers find that their hair becomes thicker and shinier, and may even grow longer than usual, as the hair strands remain in the growth phase – known as the anagen phase – for a longer period.

After childbirth, however, levels of female sex hormones drop suddenly, and as a result, many hair strands enter the resting, or telogen, phase. As a result, postnatal hair loss occurs – a large number of hairs fall out at once, which mothers may experience as drastic hair loss. This hair loss can be prolonged, lasting up to 6–12 months, which is long enough for the hair on the crown of the head to become noticeably thinner.

What types of hair loss might you experience after pregnancy?

Postnatal hair loss is a diffuse form of hair loss affecting the entire scalp, in which a larger proportion of hair than usual enters the resting phase at the same time, and then falls out all at once a few months later. This type of hair loss usually comes to an end after a few months, but it can leave the hair significantly thinner, so it is worth seeking professional help as soon as possible if you are experiencing pregnancy-related hair loss.

Yes, postnatal hair loss, also known as post-pregnancy hair loss, is very common and is usually a temporary, natural process. Oestrogen levels are higher during pregnancy, which is why many women’s hair appears thicker, as more hair follicles remain in the anagen, or growth, phase. Following childbirth, hormonal changes cause oestrogen levels to drop significantly, and more hair follicles may enter the telogen, or resting, phase – as a result, a a few months later, there is increased hair shedding, which can be alarming but is, in itself, a normal phenomenon.
