How common is male-pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)?
Between 25 and 30% of men experience some degree of visible male hair loss by the age of 30, whilst half of all men aged 40 are already experiencing gradual hair loss. What causes androgenetic alopecia?
Male-pattern hair loss is caused by a combination of genetic factors and hormonal processes. In men, the male sex hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) shortens the hair growth phase and causes the hair follicles to shrink.
What are the symptoms of androgenetic alopecia?
Androgenetic alopecia is a progressively worsening condition, the rate and extent of which can vary considerably from person to person, but its symptoms are easily recognisable.
In men, the stage of male hair loss is assessed on the basis of symptoms using the Norwood-Hamilton scale:
Hair loss typically begins with a receding hairline at the temples and/or thinning around the crown.
Later, distinct bald patches appear, extending to the centre of the crown and the back of the head.
In its advanced stage, only a few scattered, weakened strands of hair remain on the crown of the head.
Whilst some people experience rapid hair loss, others may find that their hair thins gradually.
The area around the temples, the nape of the neck and the area below the nape are generally less affected; hair loss is less common in these areas.
How does androgenetic alopecia affect the hair?
Over time, hair follicles that have shrunk due to hormonal effects produce thinner, weaker strands of hair; eventually, the hair strands no longer appear on the surface of the scalp, which ultimately leads to baldness. The process of hair loss generally worsens with ageing due to a deterioration in microcirculation, but with treatment started in good time, male-pattern hair loss can be effectively managed and may even be reversed.

What is androgenetic alopecia, or male-pattern hair loss?
Androgenic alopecia, also known as male-pattern hair loss, is characterised by the gradual miniaturisation of hair follicles due to a genetic predisposition and hormonal factors, the hair strands become thinner, and increasingly noticeable thinning develops on the scalp.
How does male hair loss manifest in men?
In men, the hairline often recedes, followed by thinning at the crown (the pattern is described by the Hamilton–Norwood scale). Androgenetic hair loss can also occur in women; however, in women it is typically characterised by diffuse thinning affecting the entire scalp, whilst the hairline usually remains intact.
What causes androgenetic alopecia, and what is the appropriate treatment?
DHT (a form of testosterone) plays a role in androgenetic alopecia, as it can shorten the duration of the hair’s growth phase (anagen phase).
