Is a burning, itchy scalp and hair loss making your daily life a misery?

Many people may experience a burning, itchy scalp and hair loss at the same time, which may suggest that these problems have a common underlying cause, or that there is some sort of causal link between an itchy scalp and hair loss. Although many people may be affected by this problem at some point in their lives, you shouldn’t take it lightly or simply brush it off, thinking ‘it’ll sort itself out’. Why should you take an itchy scalp seriously? A burning, itchy scalp can even be a sign of an infection or skin condition, and when combined with hair loss, it may indicate a serious problem.

In this article, we’ll look at the common causes of a burning, itchy scalp and hair loss, as well as the options for treatment and prevention.

What is the link between an itchy scalp and hair loss?

Although both problems can occur independently, there is often a link between hair loss and an itchy scalp. Fungal infections, allergic reactions to hair care products and inflammation of the hair follicles can all cause a burning, itchy scalp and hair loss.
In more severe cases, scarring on the scalp can also cause intense itching, as the process may affect the nerves in the scalp. Hair loss associated with scarring may therefore explain the itching sensation, but this condition can lead to serious problems and permanent hair loss.
Excessive or frequent scratching can also damage the scalp and hair follicles, which may lead to temporary hair loss, bleeding or scabbing, so if you experience an itchy sensation on your scalp, it is better to see a doctor rather than constantly scratching the area.
In certain cases, such as male-pattern hair loss, hair loss is not accompanied by itching; therefore, scratching does not affect the rate of hair loss, as hereditary hair loss is not caused by itching. Nevertheless, it is not advisable to scratch your scalp too much, as this can introduce pathogens to the area.

What can cause an itchy scalp and hair loss at the same time?

  • Scalp ringworm (Tinea capitis): A fungal infection of the scalp causes itchy, red, ring-shaped rashes. The fungal infection weakens the hair follicles, which can lead to hair loss. It is treated with antifungal preparations, which can be prescribed by a dermatologist.
  • Allergic reactions to hair care products: Many hair care products – such as shampoos, hair dyes, gels or conditioners – can irritate the scalp, especially if you have sensitive skin or are allergic to any of the ingredients. A compound called paraphenylenediamine (PPD), found in dark hair dyes, is a common allergen, so even your hair dye could be causing an itchy scalp. If irritation occurs, it is worth switching to different hair care products.
  • Folliculitis, or inflammation of the hair follicles: This is usually caused by fungal or bacterial infections; common symptoms include itching and temporary hair loss. It can be treated with antibiotics or antifungal medicines.
  • Lichen planopilaris: An inflammatory skin condition linked to a weakened immune system. Symptoms include itching, flaking and hair loss. Unfortunately, in severe cases, it leads to the destruction of hair follicles and scarring alopecia, resulting in permanent hair loss.
  • Alopecia areata, or patchy hair loss: Patchy hair loss is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks the hair follicles. Hair falls out in patches, which is often accompanied by an itchy scalp. The exact cause is unknown, but it may be linked to a number of other autoimmune conditions. Possible treatment options include immunosuppressive therapies, steroids and certain topical treatments. Denza laser hair treatment can effectively improve the condition of patchy hair loss.
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema): This is characterised by red rashes and itching. It does not directly cause hair loss, but vigorous scratching is highly likely to result in hair being pulled out. It can be treated with topical treatments, such as medicated creams.
  • Psoriasis: An autoimmune condition that causes red, scaly, silvery patches, often on the scalp as well. Scratching can cause the scales to flake off, which may lead to hair loss. If you think you’ve spotted signs of psoriasis, see a doctor as soon as possible!
  • Dandruff: We’re all familiar with dandruff; even if we haven’t experienced it ourselves, we’ve certainly seen it in those around us. It causes a dry, itchy scalp and flaking skin. In rare cases, particularly as a result of untreated dandruff and vigorous scratching, it can also be accompanied by hair loss. The condition can be improved with anti-dandruff shampoos, creams or even natural oils, but as there are several types (oily and dry dandruff), it is worth seeking the help of a dermatologist for treatment.

Other causes of an itchy scalp

There are cases where an itchy scalp is not accompanied by hair loss; in such instances, it is possible that the underlying cause is not a skin condition, but rather, for example, stress or an allergic reaction to a particular food. The cold air in winter can dry out the scalp, making it irritated and itchy. In other cases, increased stress can be the cause, as it often affects the condition of the skin. Food intolerances also frequently cause skin irritation, so if you are only experiencing itchy skin, it is possible that the problem is not caused by a scalp condition.
It is important to seek medical advice in all cases if you experience any abnormalities or a burning, itchy scalp. Furthermore, hair loss can also be a sign of a more serious health problem, so it is important to undergo a proper examination in all cases.
