Thinning hair: what are the possible symptoms?

As there can be numerous causes of hair strand thinning, the symptoms also vary widely. In addition to the hair becoming thinner and weaker, increased hair loss affecting the entire scalp is often observed. Furthermore, in many cases, a widening parting and thinning hair on the crown of the head can be observed, which suggests a genetic cause. Furthermore, scalp conditions can also lead to hair strand thinning and a deterioration in hair quality, so itching, dandruff or inflammation may also be warning signs.

What might be the causes of thinning hair?

The most common cause of hair strand thinning is what is known as androgenetic alopecia, which is caused by hereditary factors and is a problem that affects a surprisingly large number of women. In this condition, the majority of hair follicles remain in the resting phase for a longer period, meaning fewer hairs enter the active growth phase. As a result, the hair follicles gradually shrink, and the hairs become increasingly thinner and shorter. After a while, the hairs become so fine that they are unable to break through the surface of the skin.
There may be other reasons for hair strand thinning:
  • Ageing: The deterioration of microcirculation in the scalp is an inevitable consequence of the ageing process, resulting in hair follicles receiving less oxygen and nutrients, which leads to hair strand thinning.
