What is PCOS?
PCOS, or polycystic ovary syndrome, is a complex metabolic disorder that primarily affects women of childbearing age; it takes its name from the tiny cysts that frequently appear in the ovaries. PCOS is characterised by elevated levels of androgen hormones; furthermore, one of the key features of the condition is that it disrupts the ovulation process. This can lead to irregular or prolonged periods, as well as difficulties in conceiving.
What symptoms might indicate PCOS?
PCOS may also cause other unpleasant symptoms, such as:
levels of male sex hormones, i.e. androgens, rise
which includes, amongst other things, insulin resistance, mood swings, anxiety or depression
weight gain, mainly around the waist
persistent spots and oily skin, male-pattern hair growth

How does PCOS affect women’s hair?
Under normal circumstances, female sex hormones dominate in a woman’s body, whilst male sex hormones are also present, albeit in smaller quantities. In PCOS, the balance between male and female sex hormones is disrupted, causing a disturbance in the woman’s hormonal balance. Male-pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is a common accompanying symptom of PCOS: the key sex hormone, testosterone, is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which triggers hair loss.

What is the link between PCOS and hair loss?
Hair loss is a common symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) because levels of androgen hormones in the body can rise. In the scalp, these androgens can be converted into DHT (dihydrotestosterone) via the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which, in susceptible individuals, can cause hair loss, hair strand thinning and a reduction in hair shaft thickness – this is known as androgenetic alopecia, or male-pattern hair loss. It is important to note that PCOS is often associated with insulin resistance and inflammation, which can also affect hair growth and exacerbate hair loss.
What can be done about hair loss in women?
