Hair loss in children: what types of hair loss can occur?
In children, the causes of hair loss can be varied, and several types of hair loss may occur, just as they do in adults. The most common of these is patchy hair loss, or alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune condition: the body attacks its own hair follicles, creating well-defined bald patches on the scalp. Patchy hair loss in children often occurs unexpectedly, but it also has a genetic component; therefore, if there is a family history of the condition, its onset can be expected. In addition, other autoimmune diseases and health problems can also increase the risk:

Although hair loss in children usually presents as patchy hair loss, even so-called telogen effluvium can occur in very young children. In such cases, the hair follicles enter the resting phase prematurely and then fall out in large numbers. This can be triggered by a feverish illness, physical or emotional trauma, surgery or even a nutritional deficiency.
In addition to these, in rare cases, fungal infections of the scalp and compulsive hair-pulling may also occur in childhood.
How does patchy hair loss (alopecia areata) affect children’s hair?
In alopecia areata, the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, which disrupts the hair growth cycle. As a result, inflammation develops on the scalp, and the hair follicles exit the active growth phase prematurely, causing the hair to fall out in the affected areas.
This type of hair loss does not involve pain or scarring; the hair follicles are not permanently destroyed, but merely become inactive, so the hairs can grow back with the right treatment.

What can cause hair loss in children, and when should I see a doctor?
Hair loss in children can be caused by a variety of factors, so it is important to observe the scalp and the nature of the hair loss. What is patchy hair loss (alopecia areata) in children, and will the hair grow back?
