Causes and types of hair loss

The condition of our hair is important not only in terms of our appearance, but also because it reflects our overall health; changes in it can therefore indicate a serious problem. Although hair loss is a natural phenomenon to a certain extent, if you experience excessive hair loss, it is advisable to seek expert help as soon as possible, as there may be a number of different underlying causes, such as hormonal, genetic or lifestyle factors.

What counts as normal hair loss?

Losing up to 100 hairs a day is considered normal, as hair loss is part of the hair’s natural growth cycle, which consists of three phases: active growth (anagen), transitional (catagen) and resting (telogen). If the rate of hair loss differs from the norm, this is referred to as pathological hair loss, which can be caused by a variety of factors.

The most common types of hair loss

Androgenic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss)

One of the most common types of hair loss, which can affect both men and women. In men, it is characterised by a gradual receding hairline and balding on the crown of the head, whilst in women it tends to manifest as thinning hair across the entire scalp, the first noticeable signs of which can be seen at the parting. It is caused by a combination of hormonal and genetic factors; in the case of female hair loss, changes in hormone levels or the development of hormonal disorders (such as polycystic ovary syndrome) also play a significant role.

Telogen effluvium (diffuse hair loss)

As a result of a disruption to the hair growth cycle, hair follicles enter the resting phase prematurely and then fall out. This type of hair loss, which primarily affects women, is characterised by extensive hair loss across the entire scalp. There are numerous potential underlying causes, such as sudden physical or emotional stress, chronic illnesses, surgery, significant weight loss, thyroid problems or side effects of medication. Hair loss can also be caused by hormonal imbalances, hormonal changes in women, iron or zinc deficiency, vitamin deficiency, or other factors. These causes are particularly common in women.

Alopecia areata (patchy hair loss)

is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the hair follicles. As a result, round, sharply defined bald patches may appear on the scalp and on hair-covered areas of the body. It is most common in childhood and young adulthood, and is often associated with other autoimmune diseases.

The most common causes of hair loss are

  • Ageing: due to a deterioration in the blood supply to the scalp, the hair follicles do not receive the nutrients they need for growth
  • Genetic predisposition: plays a decisive role, particularly in male-pattern hair loss
  • Hormonal changes: puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, the menopause, PCOS or thyroid disorders
  • Stress: as a result of prolonged psychological strain or trauma, large numbers of hair follicles may enter the resting phase
  • Autoimmune diseases: they can also cause patchy or other types of hair loss
  • Medicines and medical treatments: for example, chemotherapy, blood pressure-lowering medicines, antidepressants or hormone preparations
  • Lifestyle: an unhealthy lifestyle can have a negative impact on the condition of your hair

How can you identify the type of hair loss?

Although different types of hair loss have characteristic symptoms, the causes of hair loss can be wide-ranging. It is therefore always advisable to seek expert help if you experience hair loss, as several types of hair loss often occur simultaneously. Denza’s experts use AI-driven hair diagnostics, as well as supplementary diagnostic tests (such as laboratory tests) where necessary, to determine the cause and type of your hair loss.

Treating hair loss: how can the Denza More & Better Hair protocol help with hair loss?

Treating hair loss requires a comprehensive approach. The multi-award-winning Denza protocol uses a combination of complex therapeutic elements to specifically support the regeneration of hair follicles. During the treatments, microcirculation in the scalp may be enhanced, nutrient supply may improve, and the hair growth cycle may be restored. The protocol can not only increase the number of hairs but also improve their thickness and quality. The treatment is painless, safe and can deliver effective results for most types of hair loss, regardless of the underlying causes.
